The fundamental component which makes the technique of filmmaking an ensemble of identifiable featuring is basically the art of editing. The way a film maker composes space and time through assembly of static and dynamic images and sounds which are on screen and off screen will be analyzed in the course.

Film editing is the art, technique and practice of assembling shots into a coherent sequence. It is part of post-production, or everything that goes on after the actual shooting of the film. Other aspects of post-production include sound editing and mixing, computer generated effects, and soundtrack creation. The film editor’s job is to join together the various shots into scenes, and the scenes into a finished movie. They usually work closely with the director to realize his or her vision for the film and to make the efforts of everyone else involved shine.

The job of an editor is not simply to mechanically put pieces of a film together, cut off film slates or edit dialogue scenes. He must creatively work with the layers of images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as well as the actors’ performances to effectively ‘re-imagine’ and even re-write the film to craft a cohesive whole. Editors usually play a dynamic role in the making of a film.
